At the beginning of the BBC News School Report project, I was assigned the job of assistant news editor which, for me, was a really enjoyable role. Firstly, I was given to reporters, Leah and Toby, to work with and help decide stories as well as making sure they were put together in a way that could be used for our news broadcast. After spending a good 40 minutes researching news stories and breaking it down to our personal favourites, we had decided which stories the reporters would like to work on. In the end, Leah decided to report on how technology affects young people’s brains, and Toby decided to report on if rugby should be allowed in schools after the recent debate from doctors stating that it was too dangerous to be played within a school environment. It was a fairly long process however once the stories had been picked, it was a pretty straight forward from there. We had also planned out how to present/report the stories with all the features such as voice overs and interviews. As well as this, we had read through the news articles making sure we had a clear idea of what the reporters and I were talking about. Once checking the stories with the head news editor, Lauren, and director of the project, Charlie, the stories were set to go.
On the day, myself, camera operator Ben and reporter Leah set off to find a suitable place to film the report and how we would present the final story. It took the majority of the morning but we did it with little difficulty and not a lot of complications. We spent time searching for the perfect location to film the story with nothing going wrong. It did take a little while as most of the rooms were occupied, but we did eventually find a location suitable for filming. Afterwards we filmed Leah doing her report which took longer than expected as she kept worrying the camera was too close to her face. Shortly after this, we uploaded the report, all footage and still frames to later be edited by the editorial team to complete the story. Toby and Will had organised their stories effectively and completed their story ready for editing, however they did have to re-film their report as Toby felt the urge to sit on a swivel chair and couldn’t sit still. After discussing with the editor in charge of the stories, it was up to them to complete them to the best they could be.
Having been involved in this project, I have learnt some really good skills and found it really enjoyable to be involved in a team of hardworking people to complete an amazing end result. It is definitely a good thing to be a part of and I’m really glad I had this opportunity as it has been a fun, productive day that I would happily do again!
